When to plant Poppy
Delicate, papery flowers from very hardy annuals (and some perennials). The dust-fine seed needs cold and light to germinate, so scatter it on the surface of cool spring or fall soil and don't cover it. It dislikes transplanting and self-sows for years.

How to grow Poppy
Poppy is best direct-sown straight into the garden, as it dislikes being transplanted. Give it full sun and space plants about 6 inches apart. It takes roughly 70 days from planting to its first harvest, so count that against your frost dates to be sure it can finish. Classic companions include direct-sow among vegetables; the flowers feed early bees.
