When to plant Leek
A hardy, slow-growing onion relative grown for its mild white shank. Setting seedlings into deep holes and mounding soil up the stems blanches them long and tender. Extremely cold-hardy — many types stand in the ground all winter.
Companions: Carrot, celery, onion — avoid beans and peas
How to grow Leek
Leek is usually started indoors and transplanted out, giving this hardy crop the head start it needs. Give it full sun and space plants about 6 inches apart. It takes roughly 110 days from planting to its first harvest, so count that against your frost dates to be sure it can finish. Classic companions include carrot, celery, onion — avoid beans and peas.
Grower's tip: Drop seedlings into deep dibbed holes and hill up the soil to grow long, white shanks.
