When to plant Ground Cherry
A husked relative of the tomatillo with small, sweet, pineapple-tasting fruit. Grow it exactly like a tomato. The papery-husked fruits ripen and simply drop to the ground — gather them off the soil, and they keep for weeks in their husks.
Companions: Tomato, pepper, basil
How to grow Ground Cherry
Ground Cherry is usually started indoors and transplanted out, giving this tender crop the head start it needs. Give it full sun and space plants about 24 inches apart. It takes roughly 70 days from planting to its first harvest, so count that against your frost dates to be sure it can finish. Classic companions include tomato, pepper, basil.
Grower's tip: Grown like a tomato; the husked fruits are ripe once they drop to the ground on their own.
